JOURNAL RANKINGS

Rankings of Comparable
Specialized Journals by ISI Impact Factor,
ISI Immediacy Index,
and PrestigeFactor.com's
Prestige Factor

  • Sources of Rankings:

  • The Impact Factor and Immediacy Index
rankings by ISI (Institute for Scientific Information)
are for 2001 and 2002.  The source is the
    ISI Journal Citation Reports.

PrestigeFactor.com (which now is out of business)
based its rankings upon citations of nonsurvey articles
    published in 1998, 1999, and 2000.

  • Choice of Journals:

  • Macroeconomic Dynamics does not seek to compete
with the best general interest economics journals,
such as Econometrica, published by the Econometric
Society, or the American Economic Review,
published by the American Economic Association,
    which have very high readership,
vast financial resources, and typically were founded
    over 70 years ago.

As should be no surprise, Econometrica's
rankings by Impact Factor and Prestige Factor
exceeded those of any of the journals in
the table below and would have ranked
high on the table by Immediacy Index.

Ranked by Prestige Factor
for 1998, 1999, and 2000

Prestige Factor is an adjusted Impact
Factor that subtracts out citations to
survey articles, which may not contain
original research, but may be heavily cited.

Prestige Factor was computed by
PrestigeFactor.com, which now is out
of business.

Note:  PrestigeFactor.com went out of business
following a lawsuit filed against it
by ISI.  The table above is based upon the
most recent rankings from the now
defunct firm, PrestigeFactor.com.  To be ranked by
PF, a journal had to meet a minimum citation rate
criterion set by PF for the years 1998, 1999, and 2000.
The JEG, SNDE, RED, and CE were not included
by PF and hence are ranked as 15 in the above table.

Ambition-Adjusted Journal Ranking
for 2008

This new ranking is from the article, K. M. Engemann and H. J Wall, "A Journal Ranking for the Ambitious Economist," Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Review, May/June 2009, 91(3), pp. 127-139.

The objectives of this new ranking are described in the paper's abstract (p. 127):  "The authors devise an 'ambition-adjusted' journal ranking based on citations from a short list of top general-interest journals in economics.  Underlying this ranking is the notion that an ambitious economist wishes to be acknowledged not only in the highest reaches of the profession, but also outside his or her subfield.  In addition to the conceptual advantages that they find in their ambition adjustment, they see two main practical advantages: greater transparency and a consistent treatment of subfields."

Note:  As in prior year's tables above, I have listed only those field journals that have objectives that overlap with those of Macroeconomic Dynamics.  The total number of journals ranked in the article is 69.  Some highly relevant field journals were not included in the article's ranking, since they did not get adeqate (or any) citations in top general-interest journals.

*Rejection rates are not available for these journals.  The number of articles published during the year is provided as a crude indicator of selectivity for potential authors.

Other journal-ranking research papers:

In January 2010, Pierre-Philippe Combes and Laurent Linnemer produced the paper, "Inferring Missing Citations, A Quantitataive Multi-Criteria Ranking of all Journals in Economics."  Using Google Scholar, they ranked Macroeconomic Dynamics 41st among the 60 top ranked economics journals (p. 15).  Using an alternative author score criterion, the rank was 43rd among the top 60 (p. 21).  Among macroeconomics journals, they ranked the journal 5th among the 91 macro journals (p. 47).  By all criteria, they ranked the journal as an A journal.

An older but very informative ranking, produced in 2005, is Yolanda K. Kodrzycki and Pingkang David Yu, "New Approaches to Ranking Economics Journals," which subsequently appeared in Contributions to Economic Analysis and Policy, Berkeley Electronic Press.  The article provides total impact of journals and
impact per article.  By far the latter is most relevant to determining journal quality, since total impact for given quality is proportational to pages printer per year.  For example, the Journal of Economic Growth, which is well known to be a very high quality journal, ranks 5th in impact within economics per article, but only 30th in total impact.  Within economics the impact ranking per article of Macroeconomic Dynamics (column 2 of Table 2) is a top 20 journal, ranking 19th out of the total of 178 economics journals ranked.  The ranking of 19th by that criterion within economics exceeds the ranking of such journals as the Journal of Econometrics (ranked 22), Journal of Business and Economic Statistics (ranked 23), Economic Journal (ranked 24), Journal of Labor Economics (ranked 25), Journal of Applied Econometrics (ranked 31), Journal of Economic Theory (ranked 32), Journal of Economic History (ranked 34), Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control (ranked 36), Econometric Theory (ranked 37), Games and Economic Behavior (ranked 41), Journal of Urban Economics (ranked 42), Economic Theory (ranked 46),  Economica (ranked 60), Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization (ranked 68), Economics Letters (ranked 70), International Journal of Game Theory (ranked 75), Journal of Mathematical Economics (ranked 78), Journal of Macroeconomics (ranked 119), and the Journal of Post Keynesian Economics (ranked 125).  By that criterion, the best macroeconomics field journal is the Journal of Economic Growth, edited by Oded Galor (who also is an Associate Editor of Macroeconomic Dynamics).

Alternative sources of journal rankings, widely used in Europe
, are the Wirtschafts Universitšt's
WU Journal Rating in Vienna, based upon the Social Science Citation Index, and the UK's Journal League Table.   The WU Journal Rating ranks Macroeconomic Dynamics as an A journal.  Their rankings do not appear to have been updated since 2002.   The more recent British Journal League Table, updated in 2006, ranks Macroeconomic Dynamics as "World Leading and Internationally Excellent," which is its highest ranking.
